Tua Tagovailoa will have to wait until Saturday to find out if he's the victor of college football's top prize. For the first time in 84 years, the top three vote-getters are quarterbacks of color: Oklahoma's Kyler Murray, Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins. Tagovailoa also won the Walter Camp Award, another award that goes to the best player in the country.
Murray added the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback Thursday night at ESPN's College Football Award Show at the Hall of Fame in Atlanta. He beat out Oklahoma's Kyler Murray and West Virginia's Will Grier for the award.
Murray beat out Tagovailoa and Washington State's Gardner Minshew II for the Davey O'Brien.
"I think he's been one of the best players in college football all year long", Alabama head coach Nick Saban said last week. The past five winners of the Walter Camp Award won the Heisman, while the past four Maxwell winners did the same.More news: Apple finally releases a case for the iPhone XR
Murray joins Baker Mayfield (2017), Josh Heupel (2000), Jason White (2003) and Sam Bradford (2008) as previous winners from Oklahoma. Earlier in the day, Murray was also announced as the AP Player of the Year.
Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray has put together one of the greatest individual seasons in Sooners football history. Through 13 games, the sophomore has completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 3,353 yards and a school-record 37 touchdowns.
The skinny: Opened the season as the betting favorite for the Heisman despite not starting a game, thanks largely to a performance in the national title game that included the 41-yard winning touchdown pass in overtime.
Murray started his career at Texas A&M, where his father, Kevin Murray, set season and career passing records as the Aggies' quarterback in the mid-1980s.
