"One of our most important programmes is increasing the range of missiles and ammunition", said the head of the Iranian air force, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
The Iranian mission to the United Nations claimed that describing Iran's ballistic missile program as inconsistent with United Nations resolution 2231, which was passed as part of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and Western powers, or as a regional threat was "a deceptive and hostile policy of the U.S".
That, according to Pompeo violates UN Security Council Resolution 2231 which calls on Iran not to undertake any activity related to "ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons" as part of endorsing a nuclear deal with Tehran.
Iran's U.N. Mission said in a press release Tuesday that "all ballistic missile related activities of Iran are in full conformity" with the 2015 Security Council resolution and said that "it is the USA that is in absolute violation of the very same resolution" for "its unlawful withdrawal" from the nuclear deal.
European leaders have been troubled by Mr Trump's rhetoric and fear his decision to pull out of the Paris climate change accord and the 2015 Iran nuclear deal undermine European priorities.
For their part, France and the United Kingdom extended their former criticisms of Iranian belligerence but would only say that Saturday's launch was "inconsistent" with Resolution 2231.
"We would like to see the European Union move sanctions that target Iran's missile program", Brian Hook, the State Department official who oversees Iran policy, said Monday.
The UN resolution calls on Iran to refrain from testing missiles capable of carrying a nuclear weapon, but does not specifically bar Tehran from missile launches.More news: Former President George H.W. Bush placed onto Air Force One
France's United Nations envoy said there was "widely-shared concern" among the 15 council members related to the launch.
"We will continue to both develop and test missiles".
And while Pompeo claimed the test violated United Nations resolution 2231, the launch does not constitute a violation of the United Nations measure, according to the language of the resolution.
US President Donald Trump announced in May that the US was withdrawing from the nuclear agreement describing it as "the worst deal ever", announcing a series of tough sanctions on the country in the following months.
He said that "Russia hasn't embraced Western values of freedom and global cooperation" and added that "Iran has blatantly disregarded U.N. Security Council resolutions".
However, the missile test has caused provocations to those countries attempting their side of the deal inspite of the removal of the USA, extracting criticism from European countries that have else have been encouraging of the Iran pact.
