Verizon, Samsung to release 5G smartphones in USA in 2019

Expect more flagship phones to feature fingerprint sensors embedded underneath their front displays in 2019, along with 5G connectivity. Samsung and Verizon's 5G device will sport a Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver, RF front-end, and antenna elements.

"5G will usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, allowing people to connect to data, experiences and other in ways never thought possible", said Brian Higgins, Vice President, Wireless Device and Product Marketing at Verizon. When fully implemented, it will offer capacity and download speeds much faster than a 4G LTE network.

Qualcomm isn't providing a lot of intricate details on the Snapdragon 855 today - those specifics will come at a later date - but the company has given us a few crumbs to munch on. The tech is supposed to kill off Wi-Fi and fixed-line broadband, because you'll be expected to use 5G everywhere, somehow, connecting to carriers and private 5G networks for your internet.

The next top-end addition to Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor family, which powers millions upon millions of Android smartphones, will be the 855. The Snapdragon 855 is the first chipset from Qualcomm with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which will help in AI computations.

Just like the last generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is an Octa-core chipset, manufactured using a 7nm FinFET process by TSMC (Taiwan Silicon Manufacturing Company) with three CPU clusters.

Also included inside the reference 5G phone is Qualcomm's own RF antenna, QTM052, created to help eliminate interference and signal issues common in phones when something as simple as holding the device occurs.

Another notable feature with the latest SD 855 chipset is the Qualcomm's new 3D Sonic Sensor fingerprint technology. Nevertheless, Qualcomm has stated that the 3D Sonic Sensor will appear on new devices within the first half of 2019. The company is hosting events with more information about the Snapdragon 855 throughout the Summit, and most of the mobile platform's specifications and features will be made public during Day 2. The press conference is now underway, and we will announce more details shortly.

"It can now recognize who and what you're capturing", Katouzian said.

During the keynote on Tuesday, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform.
