Spire Taps AWS Ground Station to Extend Ground Station Network

Amazon Web Services, which is Amazon's cloud business, in a press release on Monday said it now manages a network of 12 ground station antennas, which will be deployed for the company's GSaaS venture.

AWS has helped Guardian get ahead of insurance industry disruption driven by new technology and changing customer expectations, and enabled us to innovate and provide services how, when and where our customers prefer, said Dean Del Vecchio, Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Head of Enterprise Shared Services at Guardian.

Then when it comes to Lockheed Martin the two companies announced virtual resilient ground - or VERGE - to combat the issue of parabolic antennas and their limitation to only communicate with one satellite at a time, and only when it is directly overhead. "They will be able to ingest data straight into AWS, where they can securely store, analyse and transmit products to their customers without needing to worry about building all of the infrastructure themselves", he added.

They can collect streams of data more often so that data can be used and analyzed more quickly, Ambrose said. AWS is kicking off with a pair of ground stations and says it will have a total of a dozen up and running by the middle of next year.

"Now, all that these companies will need to do is schedule ground station time, downlink and uplink satellite data and immediately start data-processing", said Jassy, "Our pay-per-use ground stations now mean that customers save up to 80 percent of their ground station costs". Earlier, data was picked up through a parabolic antenna, which connects to only one satellite. A ground station is the vital link for transmitting data to-and-from satellites in orbit. "In time, with satellites built to take full advantage of the distributed Verge network, AWS and Lockheed Martin expect to see customers develop surprising new capabilities using the service". The Verge antenna network is deployed across the globe and communicates with 800 satellites now in orbit around the Earth.

Customers and partners now previewing the AWS Ground Station are Lockheed Martin, Digital Globe, HawkEye, Advanced Space, Open Cosmos, Black Sky, Capella Space and others.

These nodes or antennae, when spread across the world, can help satellites, planes, ships, and telecommunications.

Amazon Web Services has today announced the availability of AWS RoboMaker, a new service that makes it easy for developers to develop, test, and deploy robotics applications, as well as build intelligent robotics functions using cloud services.

According to the Satellite Industry Association, the size of the industry is $110 billion.

"Leading companies in financial services like Ellie Mae turn to AWS for the agility, security, performance, and cloud services required to operate at scale and with speed", said Mike Clayville, Vice President, Worldwide Commercial Sales at AWS.
