Soyuz rocket failure caused by damaged sensor, says Russian Federation

All manned missions were put on hold until investigations behind the launch failure were completed - which put UAE's mission to send its first Emirati astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) onboard the Soyuz MS-12 mission on April 5 into question as well.

The incident, on 11 October, was the first serious launch problem by a manned Soyuz space mission since 1983.

The video, which was posted various places including the official Roscosmos Twitter account, shows the rocket launch from the very start all the way to its eventual abort.

A failed Russian Soyuz rocket launch three weeks ago that aborted after just two minutes was caused by a sensor that was damaged during assembly, according to an official investigation. They are due to return to Earth around December 20.

Krikalev said the next launch will now be moved forward to December 3, and will carry the same crew as originally intended on this mission, MS-11: Russian Oleg Kononenko, American Anne McClain, and Canadian David Saint-Jacques.

After about 114 seconds of flight, the emergency escape system sprang into action, separating the crew capsule from the rocket, which then entered "ballistic descent" before parachuting to earth. That crew includes Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency, Serena Aunon-Chancellor of NASA and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos. It's relied upon by NASA, Europe, Russia, and other partners.

The Soyuz rocket launched at 08:40 local time (02:40 GMT) from the Baikanour cosmodrome site on 11 October when the malfunction occurred.

This was ultimately what doomed the mission, as the piece slammed into the side of the second stage booster fuel tank.

"The reason found by the commission (investigating the accident) was the abnormal operation of a sensor that signals the separation of the first and second stages", Krikalyov said at a space industry event in Moscow.

Roscosmos officials explained that a malfunctioning sensor led to an issue with the separation between the two rocket stages, causing one piece of the rocket to fail to separate fully, sending the rocket into a spin and prompting the instant abort.

Roscosmos is due to hold a press conference Thursday to further detail the findings of the accident probe.
