The second-largest jackpot was a $1.586 billion Powerball drawing on January 13, 2016.

In the Powerball, the victor can also opt for a cash prize of more than $354 million.

The Mega Millions lottery jackpot has reached a record-breaking £1.26 billion ($1.6bn) after there was no victor of the £765 million ($1bn) prize.

On Friday, no jackpot winners were selected in the Mega Millions drawing, which had a grand prize of over $900 milion.

Both lotteries' jackpots have been increased recently by rule changes that have decreased the odds of winning.

As more tickets sell before the draw on Tuesday, chances grow that at least one buyer will pick all six winning numbers. If there is a victor, they will get the 13th largest payout in history.

But if you are itching to play, you could win even more on Tuesday.

"Mega Millions has already entered historic territory, but it's truly astounding to think that now the jackpot has reached an all-time world record", Gordon Medenica, lead director of the Mega Millions Group, said in a statement.

In Florida and Tennessee, two people won $2 million, while seven others took home $1 million in seven other states including Indiana. And on July 24, a California office of 11 co-workers shared a $543 million jackpot, which is the largest-ever prize won in a Mega Millions game.

Then on Saturday, no winners were selected in the Powerball drawing.

USA lottery winnings are taxable at the federal level, unlike in many other countries, while some states also impose local taxes.
