'Polio-like' illness cases flaring up: Should you be concerned?

Two cases are in King County, one in each Pierce, Lewis and Snohomish counties.

AFM typically affects young children and creates polio-like symptoms. Four of the five had fever of 100.4 F or greater. Its origins are a mystery, but officials say a virus can cause some cases.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Tina Tan said she's confident Julia will recover; and she said people shouldn't panic, because the cluster of AFM cases is not an epidemic.

Also this week, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced that 14 cases of AFM have occurred in the state this year.

"Isolation protocols and infection control procedures are in place, and we are working with the CDC and the Allegheny County Health Department to further monitor and evaluate the patient conditions", Kunicky said. "While we don't know if it is effective in preventing AFM, washing your hands often with soap and water is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to other people".

Last week, the Minnesota Department of Health said it was investigating six cases of AFM in children over the past few weeks but did not identify what virus or other cause may have led to the illnesses. "So, we've seen that there's an association between viruses, specifically enterovirus, in the past". Some people with AFM may be unable to urinate.

Additionally, the CDC has found a possible link between an increase in a respiratory virus and an increase of AFM.

A 2-year-old girl from Batavia is facing a long, hard recovery after contracting a rare polio-like disease that has been reported in children across the United States. But unlike polio, there is no vaccine for AFM.

The CDC estimates that less than a million people will get AFM every year in the United States.

And in 2018 alone, 38 new cases of AFM in 16 states across the country were confirmed by the CDC.

The condition is not new, but officials started to see a rise in cases in 2014.

Other states have also reported cases.
