‘Venom’ Devours $80M; ‘A Star Is Born’ Shines Bright with $42M

Despite all of the critical teeth-gnashing and the suspicions that Venom was going to be a turkey of epic proportions, Sony's first Spider-Man spin-off pulled the proverbial rope-a-dope on its first weekend and broke box office records.

Venom also dominated the worldwide box office with $125.2 million, setting an global opening record. The film holds a 31% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes.

Venom has shattered a North American box office record in October with an $80 million opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

One of Marvel's most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

However, on Metacritic, Venom has a 5.8 user score, way below than the 9.2 user score for Lady Gaga's 'A Star Is Born'.

That movie went on to earn £30.7 million overall in the United Kingdom, and though it seems unlikely that Venom will go quite that high, bosses will no doubt be relieved that the negative buzz from critics didn't affect ticket sales.

"A Star is Born" carries a 91% on the tomatometer and has all the film nerds making Oscar predictions way too early.

Animated movie Smallfoot finished third with US$14.4 million, followed by comedy Night School, with US$12.3 million.
