Taylor Swift helps boost United States voter registrations

Tuesday is the deadline for Tennessee (and many other states) to register to vote in the upcoming November 6 election.

Kamari Guthrie, director of communications for Vote.org told Buzzfeed News that they have experienced an unprecedented flood of new voter registrations across America since Swift's post was posted.

Taylor Swift's decision to break her longstanding silence on politics and urge people to back Democrats in the upcoming USA mid-term elections has led to a massive spike in registrations, according to a voter advocacy group.

"Taylor Swift's visibility on this issue is driving a lot of coverage of voter registration and it's reaching many of her fans who would not otherwise be following news like this", he said.

In her post Sunday, Swift vowed to vote for two Democratic candidates: former governor Phil Bredesen for the U.S. Senate and Rep. Jim Cooper for re-election.

"In the past I've been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now", Swift wrote.

Trump, who has campaigned for Blackburn, dismissed Swift's opinion of the candidate, saying Swift "doesn't know anything about her". It seems that fans and followers from the musician's home state of Tennesse were among the most impacted by Taylor's words.

It was not the first time Rihanna has waded into USA politics, although the singer is from Barbados and ineligible to vote because she is not an American citizen. (Swift appears to be referencing the sexual assault trial in which a local radio DJ was convicted of groping her at a meet-and-greet event). The musician, who has long strayed out of political issues, also voiced her support for two Democrat candidates.

The Speak Now singer said she was a supporter of gay rights and women's rights, and against racism.

"She voted against the reauthorisation of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. But people would still rather believe that she is the one who is pushing Trump's agenda".

In a number of states, the deadline to register to vote is today, October 9th. (In a typical day the site sees 14,000 visitors.) Of those that visited yesterday, 65,000 registered to vote.

The singer's intervention was not well received by the country's top Republican, U.S. President Donald Trump.

"She weighs every word carefully, but she has to because few artists receive more scrutiny than she does, " said Beverly Keel, chair of the department of recording industry at Middle Tennessee State University.
