Knicks President's Comments May Make Jimmy Butler Trade Unlikely

Butler's trade request reportedly singled out the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, and Los Angeles Clippers as the teams he would prefer to be traded to.

The biggest question is what or who the Cavs have that the Wolves would want.

In 458 regular-season games over seven years in the NBA, Butler has averaged 16.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals while playing 32.8 minutes a night.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra covets versatile, two-way players, and Miami may offer Butler a welcome change in scenery from frigid Minnesota.

The Timberwolves also hope to unload the remaining $48 million on forward Gorgui Dieng's contract if they do indeed deal Butler. This ended the 13-season playoff drought for the franchise. Neither Taylor nor Butler appear interested in being paired before then, but it's unclear how quickly it can strike a deal with a team of interest.

Butler told Thibodeau that he would like to be traded before reporting for Timberwolves media day on Monday. He deserves the extension, and Wolves fans can at least celebrate having one of their All-Stars locked up while the other one remains firmly on the trade market. He made his first All-Star game last season and was named NBA Rookie of the Year during the 2015-16 campaign. During the 2015-16 season, Butler and Noah had multiple disputes and had to be separated in the locker room many times. Love, by the way, can not be traded until January after signing a four-year, $120 million extension with Cleveland on July 24. However, using all the information and leaks that we know of thus far, could help us create an educated guess of what a Jimmy B trade could look like when/if he finally gets dealt.

That's a lot to give up for any one player, especially a player they can sign outright in free agency next summer. Their loose pieces in Kyle Korver, Jordan Clarkson, Cedi Osman, and Larry Nance Jr. simply don't generate enough to warrant an equal trade, making this a likely impasse to get a deal done. General Managers have already set their rosters. However, it was seen by most as a financial decision.
