Flights at an worldwide airport in Lyon, France, have been grounded after a man rammed a auto into the terminal building the sped onto the runway, before eventually being detained.

Witness Davd Peste captured the extraordinary scenes on video.

Before driving onto the runway the man had driven the auto into the glass doors of one of the airport terminals.

Nobody was injured in the incident but several flights had to be diverted, according to the flight-tracking application Flightradar24.

She said the man first drove the wrong way on the A43 highway and crashed into a barrier at a small aerodrome before heading to Lyon's much larger Saint Exupery airport.

The motorist then abandons the vehicle and continues on foot, weaving his way past several cars before being wrestled to the ground by officers.
