Tesla CEO Elon Musk Muses About AI, Space Over Whiskey and Weed

The CEO of electric-car maker Tesla and rocket startup SpaceX spent more than two-and-a-half hours Thursday night talking to podcast host Joe Rogan about what it's like inside his head ("a never-ending explosion"), keeping a vehicle company in business ("very difficult") and trying to get governments to regulate artificial intelligence ("nobody listened").

Elon Musk appeared on comedian Joe Rogan's podcast on Thursday.

This time, the Tesla billionaire puffed on a marijuana joint during the recording of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

After asking whether it was legal, Musk then took the joint and smoked it himself on camera.

Last month, Mr Musk said he was not "on weed" when he tweeted about plans to make Tesla a private firm. Rogan asked, noting that Musk probably had not "because of stockholders". Marijuana is legal for recreational use in the state of California, although it's still illegal federally.

Musk and the host, also added whiskey to the mix.

Musk said he was not as anxious about artificial intelligence than he was previously after "taking a more fatalistic attitude".

He has denied he was smoking weed when he sent his now infamous tweet on August 7 claiming he had secured funding to take Tesla private.

Along the way, Musk drew a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission, which already had been scrutinizing the public pronouncements he's made regarding manufacturing goals and sales targets. "It is sort of like a cup of coffee in reverse".

The spot on one of the most popular podcasts in the USA marks Musk's first appearance in a public forum since he stunned the financial world last month with his short-lived effort to take Tesla private. "An electric plane isn't important right now".

"I think people should be nicer to each other", he said.

The Tesla entrepreneur spoke about artificial intelligence, colonising space and the need to "give love a chance". "Yeah, I think I tried one once", he said, when it was confirmed that it was indeed a cigarette containing marijuana and Rogan asked if he had ever used before.
