Brett Kavanaugh Snubs Handshake From Parkland Victim's Father


Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh declared fervently at his Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday the court "must never, never be viewed as a partisan institution". President Trump chose Brett Kavanaugh to break the tie.

Kennedy was a solid conservative but sided with the court's liberals on some issues, including abortion and gay rights.

Going into Tuesday's hearing, White House aides believe their nominee's task of introducing himself to the country hasn't been made more hard in the weeks leading up to this hearing.

What were the protests about?

Should a single Republican defect to oppose Kavanaugh it could throw his confirmation into jeopardy, but there has been little sign that any member of the GOP was prepared to buck Trump and their party leadership.

Others claimed the judge would let people with pre-existing medical conditions be stripped of medical coverage. "This is a mockery and a travesty of justice, " shouted one woman. Another cried: "Our democracy is broken!"

In total, the Democrats spoke out of turn and interrupted the hearing 63 times and complained about the withholding of documents 129 times, according to a tally kept by White House spokesperson Raj Shah.

Why is the nomination contentious?

More than 20 witnesses are being called for the coming days of hearings.
