'An American hero': Touching tributes flow for John McCain

Calling him a 'warmonger, ' some users recalled McCain's rendezvous with Syrian militants and even accused him of conspiring "with Hillary and Obama to create ISIS". The vote came as a huge surprise, to say the least, and added another wrinkle to the testy relationship he had with Trump. "Thank you Senator McCain for your service to the nation".

The decorated politician's family said they are "immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the previous year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers".

"He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth", said Meghan McCain, one of the late senator's seven children - three of them from a previous marriage. "And for that, we are all in his debt".

McCain's wife, Cindy, said in a tweet on Saturday that the McCain family was "overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from around the world" after Friday's announcement.

John McCain, who has died at the age of 81, was a distinguished public servant who rose to become the Republican party's nominee for president of the United States.

John McCain was born on the eve of World War II, at the dawn of the "American Century" - a time when the U.S. was at the peak of its political, military and cultural power.

Though McCain frequently sparred with his own party, plenty of Republican voices weighed in with kind remembrances Saturday. But there was one thing that wasn't as widely known about him: McCain, owner of a ranch in Arizona that is in the flight path of 500 species of migratory birds, became concerned about the environment.

But in his address to the US Studies Centre a year ago, Senator McCain did not shy away from conceding that Mr Trump was "unsettling" American allies, or that there is a debate underway in the United States about its role in the world, its resolution uncertain. McCain walks inside the Hoa Lo prison, nicknamed "the Hanoi Hilton", in Vietnam, where McCain was kept as a prisoner of war from October 1967 until March 1973.
