Trump blasts 'Wacky Omarosa' after leaked tape: 'Vicious but not smart'

She said the call came the day after she was sacked by Chief of Staff John F. Kelly.

"General Kelly - General Kelly came to me and said that you guys wanted me to leave", Newman said on the tape, referring to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired Marine general.

A former communications assistant, Ms Manigault Newman was sacked by the Trump administration last December. You know, they run a big operation, but I didn't know it. "And I think that Omarosa, unfortunately, has undercut her own credibility".

NBC News did not know what was said before or after that short exchange. Excerpts of the tape were played on air.

Omarosa Manigault Newman appeared on the Today show on Monday to talk about her book, Unhinged, and her interview with co-host Savannah Guthrie got heated quickly.

"We have Ja'Ron, who's done a fabulous job, been very involved with - he's been very involved with Jared Kushner and President Trump on prison reform from the beginning", Conway said.

In the book, she does not say she heard him use the word, or that she heard the tape, but in an interview for NPR radio on Sunday, she said she had actually heard the recording. "I would rarely see her but heard really bad things".

Few have been a member of Donald Trump's inner orbit longer than Omarosa Manigault Newman. 'More will come out about this, but the way she characterizes that meet something completely false, ' he said. In the book, she paints Trump as scattered, self-absorbed, misogynistic and insecure.

But Newman pushed back against her critics by arguing that she can substantiate her claims in the book.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said Monday: "I'm not going to get into the tick-tock of who knew what when, but the president makes the decisions".

"What time do you need to go?" They don't walk in and say to the president, "So and so leaked something", or "So and so is fighting with this one in the White House". "They weren't in the room'". Adding a quick disclaimer that they did not bother to verify wild claims made by a highly unreliable source before playing audio she gave them in full on live TV does not make it a fair and accurate depiction of what's going on. If there isn't national defense information or classified involved, merely recording ... in a SCIF is merely a security violation.

But speaking on the NBC show Meet The Press yesterday, Ms Newman said that she had heard a tape of Mr Trump using the "n-word". But she told Chuck Todd on Sunday that she later was able to hear a recording of Trump during a trip to Los Angeles.

"What I can tell you is the thought of doing something like that to a fellow employee, not to mention the leader of the free world, is completely disgraceful", he said.

Trump reacted Saturday to Manigault Newman's media tour before the release of her coming tell-all book, calling her a "low-life". She said that she was "totally complicit" when she defended the president after the Charlottesville riots one year ago.
