The paper quoted Broccoli as saying that "it's time" for a non-white actor to fill the role once Craig completes his final film in the series, which is scheduled for release in 2019.

Bond 26, which could potentially be the one to feature Elba, is expected to be released around 2022 or 2023, at which point he'd be almost 50. In a story from the United Kingdom -based tabloid Daily Star, it was stated that Equalizer 2 director Antoine Fuqua told "an industry pal" about a conversation he'd had with longtime Bond producer Barbara Broccoli.

Director Antoine Fuqua chatted to Barbara about who will take over from Daniel Craig, 50, if he hangs up his gun after the next Bond film, due next year. Idris Elba has always been rumoured to be high of the Bond boss' wish list.

Tom Hardy had been mentioned, as had Michael Fassbender and Tom Hiddleston, but Elba remains the most popular choice, even if his inclusion on the shortlist is considered controversial by some people.

Elba has been a favourite to replace Daniel Craig since talk of him taking over the role began in 2014, after leaked documents from the Sony hack revealed co-chair of the company Amy Pascal put him forward. "Idris has that", the director added. "Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male?" he said. Will Elba want to play it as much as everyone else wants him to? "Could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have - do something different with it, why not?"

In Pacific Rim, Idris Elba displayed the commanding presence required of James Bond.
