RORY MCILROY YEARNS for a breakthrough victory after a season of near misses, with the four-time major victor hopeful this week's PGA Championship can launch his "work-in-progress" game to new heights.

The PGA Championship began as a match-play event in 1916 but then went on hiatus for two years due to a little thing called World War I. Thus, this week's event is the 100th PGA Championship and it's also the last one for the foreseeable future that will be played in August and as the fourth of the four major championships on the PGA Tour's schedule.

"I didn't get up here pre British Open and yesterday (Monday) I took the day off". You actually hit it on the green, but when you didn't focus, you ended up with 50-foot putts. "It's going to be a big atmosphere out there and I'm looking forward to that". He played in the final group at the Masters, at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and last week at the Bridgestone Invitational.

Furyk already has played some practice-roundholes with some of his prospective players, including the polarizing mad scientist Bryson DeChambeau, who was over-the-top criticized for a temper tantrum he threw while practicing after a disappointing opening round at the British Open last month.

"I'm surprised at how many people are here it's really great that everybody is supporting it", Pam Myrick, a fan from Evansville, IN. When you're hitting it 370 down the middle of the fairway, you should be able to figure out how to get it on the green somewhere close. "We still get to see weeks ahead in big tournaments", Furyk said.

And then in Sunday's final round Schwartzel fired a seven-under 63‚ suddenly finding the game that was good enough to win a major seven years ago.

Player of the Year: The PGA Championship gives everyone one more shot at Player of the Year status, and with no clear leader, there's the chance for someone to swoop in and claim a bit of glory. He had to learn how to swing.

"You know what's fascinating?" said another Cardinals World Series shortstop, Ozzie Smith. Now, Woods must "get the mindset back prior to all the injuries and all the surgeries". And you look at the guys that we're calling rookies even on both sides; you look at (Tyrrell) Hatton, (Tommy) Fleetwood, (Jon) Rahm, (Alex) Noren, and those are four of their hottest players. "I mean, you want the best players".

The aura surrounding the 14-times major champion in his prime affected his playing partners, said Furyk, who believes times have changed and that Woods can only be a positive force on the team at next month's event in Paris.

The players with Woods on Wednesday - and for the next two days - were telling.

But it's not why he's downplaying his chances of becoming just the sixth golfer to complete the coveted career grand slam.

England's world number three and Olympic champion Justin Rose and Italy's British Open victor Francesco Molinari are other contenders.

"It's going to be the quintessential target golf", McIlroy said.

That could reduce some edge for big hitters.

"Blessed. Very blessed. As I was saying earlier, I didn't really know if I was going to be here or not at this level and very blessed to be here". "So, you've got two very, very solid teams, and we have our hands full".
