She didn't know it at the time but that man turned out to be Country Music star Keith Urban. As Olivia Prouse, a former student of Reed's, wrote on Twitter, Reed thought Urban was "down on his luck and couldn't pay for his Wawa snacks so she bought them for him". It turns out he was a country music superstar.
Ruth Reed has made it a goal to once a week pick up the tab for customers at a Medford Wawa, so when Urban was short a few dollars the substitute teacher stepped in to help, according to NJ.com citing a Facebook post. She said that for the last several years she has made it a resolution to pay for someone's purchases at Wawa at least once a week.
The country star played Camden's BB&T Pavilion on Friday night, which he said he nearly called "the PB&J Center" in a video following the performance.
That's when she realized he looked familiar.
"It looked like he was using a card and it didn't go through and then he asked a young lady for $5 and I thought this is it so I said, 'No I'll get it, '" Reed told KYW.
When she told him that, the man said, well, he is Keith Urban.More news: Video shows Brooklyn nail salon workers attacking customer
Ruth revealed he thanked her and said his name was Keith.
Urban, who was in town for a concert at BB&T Pavilion in Camden on Friday, told Reed she could ask his bodyguard for confirmation.
"And I just fell apart, fell apart and he was gracious".
Still, she agreed to keep her word and pay for Urban.
"And he really could have said, 'Lady, get away from me!'" she said.
