German couple jailed for selling son to pedophiles on the internet

The couple must now pay €42,500 (£38,000; $49,200) in damages to the boy and to a three-year-old girl, who was also abused by them.

A German mother and her partner were convicted and jailed Tuesday for repeatedly raping the woman's young son and selling him to pedophiles on the internet, abusing him for more than two years in a case that has horrified the country.

Six men who paid to abuse the boy will serve between eight and 10 years; the mother, Berrin T., will serve 12.5; her partner, Christian L., will serve 12.

The boy, who was nine when the trial began in June, was repeatedly sexually abused by Spanish paedophile Javier Gonzalez Diaz.

The man, whose name wasn't released for German privacy reasons, was sentenced to ten years in prison and fined €18,000 euros (£16,080). As for that footage, investigators have said it brought them "to their limits". And when the child's school raised concerns about abuse, the youth welfare office "considered the allegations so vague and so kept the information to itself".

The pair, identified as Berrin T, 48, and her partner Christian L, 39, and six others were arrested last autumn.

Police said they have another 20 suspected perpetrators in their sights.

Lais admitted on the witness stand to the assaults on the boy.

He also made serious accusations against the child's mother.

They charged several thousand euros for each instance of abuse, filmed the acts and posted them on the darknet. If he didn't she threatened to put him into foster care. His lawyer told reporters Tuesday that he was doing well "under the circumstances".

The German government's ombudsman for child sexual abuse issues, Joahnnes-Wilhelm Roerig, said the case had "laid bare a series of errors of judgement and shortcomings" by local, state and federal authorities. "The mother went to court and won the right to have her boy sent back home".
