Google Pixel 3 XL: is it really worth waiting for?

Although Android Pie is released and available for Google Pixel devices today, there's still a few features that are going to wait until the general roll-out in the fall to be available.

According to YouTuber Brandon Lee on his This is Tech Today channel, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will drop in on October 4, 2018.

Android P aka Android 9.0 will come pre-installed on both devices, as the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are expected to become the first two phones to ship with the newest version of Google's operating system.

For the rest of Google's devices still seeing updates, we have new Oreo (8.1) files for Nexus 6P (OPM6.171019.030.H1), Nexus 5X (OPM6.171019.030.H1), and Pixel C (OPM4.171019.021.Y1). As I've noted before, Android Pie is the first Android update to address the latest trends in smartphone design, such as display notches and edge-to-edge screens. The name is something of a damp squib and now the game of wait-and-see-if-I-actually-get-the-update begins. Appearing at the top of your app drawer, app actions are similar to Apple's Siri suggestions, which also suggest specific shortcuts for the things you do al the time, like look up directions home or pull up your favorite playlist. Swipe up from anywhere to see full-screen previews of recently used apps, swipe left and right to easily navigate between them, and tap on one to jump in.

Other AI-driven features are more subtle. The campaign was aimed to receive participation from Canadian content creators who are not using any Google Pixel handsets but are willing to switch to the Pixel 3.

"We've built Android 9 to learn from you - and work better for you - the more you use it". Adaptive Battery will learn which apps you use the most and prioritize battery to them, while Adaptive Brightness will figure out where you like your phone's brightness in different settings and then set that for you. You won't need an unlocked bootloader, but you will need a computer with ADB running.
