The world’s first 5G smartphone just launched and we all missed it

It's the Moto Z3, the latest flagship device and the successor to 2017's Moto Z2 Force.

The Lenovo subsidiary further explains, "When paired with the mod, moto z is the world's first smartphone with access to Verizon's 5G Network, delivering a new beginning for indulging in video, connecting home devices, working remotely and gaming in AR and VR". Customers in the United States will also be able to get a carrier-locked version of the Moto Z3 at a monthly charge of $20 for 24 months. Incidentally, the display doesn't have the increasingly common notch at the top.

Moto Z3 is powered by 2.35GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with Adreno 540 GPU. There's also a side-mounted fingerprint reader just like the Z3 Play. The device is is splash resistant. The camera supports Laser Autofocus Color and Correlated Temperature (CCT) dual LED flash. The sensors do have a f/2.0 aperture. There's an 8 MP f/2.0 shooter for selfies with 1.12um pixel size and an 84-degree field-of-view. Latency is cut, too: that pays dividends for gaming, but will also be vital when it comes to mobile virtual reality and augmented reality.

Battery: The smartphone is backed by a 3000mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery that the company claims is capable of lasting one full day on single charge. You don't get a 3.5mm headphone jack on either phone, just a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter in the box. Verizon customers can expect Android Oreo 8.1, 64 GB of storage, and 4 GB of memory on the Z3. Strangely, the Moto Z3 appears to lack an inbuilt 5G antenna. These carriers are part of an intense race to get to 5G as a way to burnish their reputation for network superiority. To offer 5G connectivity, Motorola has embedded Qualcomm's X50 modem within a module that's called the 5G Moto Mod.

The price of the 5G Moto Mod was not revealed, but the press release says that, for a limited time, you can purchase any existing Moto Mod over $100 for just $50 if you buy the new Moto Z3.

Moving on to Motorola One Power, the upcoming phone will be smartphone maker's second Android One device after Moto X4. Neither Motorola and Verizon are announcing many details about the 5G Moto Mod, so it's all a mystery for now.

Wireless carriers have spent the past few years touting their expensive network upgrades with dramatically faster 5G technology.

The Moto Z3 is a souped-up version of the Z3 Play that went official earlier this year. In addition to using the software, users will also have to report bugs and issues in the software.

For the time being, the Moto Z3 will be available only in the United States for a price of $480, which roughly translates to Rs 33,000 approx. The phone will be available in ceramic black colour variant. The 5G Moto Mod will be available later. Motorola hasn't officially confirmed availability of the flagship smartphone in India yet.

As you can see, the Moto Z3 isn't quite a real 5G phone.

There's some good news and bad news about the Moto Z3.

Similar to the Moto Z3 Play, the Moto Z3 has One Button Nav that offers an iPhone X-like experience. However, its primary selling point will be the fact that it is upgradeable and we will be getting to that in just a bit.
