New Hubble Space Telescope Photos of Mars and Saturn

Now, as Mars and Saturn swing by Earth this summer, the legendary telescope has snapped a handful of attractive imagesto add to the collection.

"The radar profile of this area is similar to that of lakes of liquid water found beneath the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets on Earth, suggesting that there is a subglacial lake at this location on Mars", said the report. A dust storm is ravaging the planet. It was home to plenty of liquid water and lakes at least 3.6 billion years ago.

Now, some lawmakers are anxious to put manned Mars missions on NASA's calendar, and a close approach could be more than just efficient - it could be the only way to get astronauts there or back safely. This may be responsible for a string of bright clouds visible near the northern polar region that are the remnants of a disintegrating storm. It also shows some of the brighter moons which were visible throughout the observation.

For the past 28 years, the Hubble Space Telescope has captured some of the most iconic images of outer space.

The visit will see Mars come into "opposition", which occurs when Earth lies directly between Mars and the sun, making the sun and Mars appear in opposite directions as viewed from the Earth.

While observing the planet Hubble also managed to capture images of six of Saturn's 62 now known moons: Dione, Enceladus, Tethys, Janus, Epimetheus, and Mimas.

QCH astronomy expert Dr Beshir Marzouk has explained in a statement that the celestial phenomenon - known as "opposition" - is important because Mars will be reaching its nearest point to Earth Friday and will appear brighter and bigger than on other days. Skygazers NOT located in North America could see the Red Planet near a Red Moon during a Total Lunar Eclipse.

"The distance between the Earth and Mars is shorter than it normally would be", said Mackay.

Either way, the discovery greatly increases the chances of extraterrestrial life existing on Mars.

"Despite its glorious girth, northern observers will pay a price during this juicy Mars apparition", Sky & Telescope contributing editor Bob King said.

On Friday night, Mars will be below and to the right of our full moon. "It is seven months overdue", Nelson said.

Praising the bipartisan support for NASA he sees among lawmakers, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican who heads the Senate subcommittee on space, said he hopes Congress's next NASA funding bill will lay out a longer term vision, rather than going year to year.
