Moon gazers in for a treat on Friday

The next time a total lunar eclipse will last this long will be in the year 2123.

A study published Monday in the journal Astrobiology cites two time periods during the moon's distant past when conditions on the surface were potentially habitable.

Lunar eclipses can only occur during a full moon when the sun fully illuminates the surface.

A look at what you need to know about the longest lunar eclipse of the century, the "blood moon" eclipse, and why you may have to travel to see it.

Over the night of July 27, and July 28, stargazers will be able to catch a glimpse of the longest lunar eclipse in over a century.

The time that the blood moon is visible depends on what area of the world onlookers are viewing the event from.

"Bloody" referred to the moon during the Eclipse.

What you'll see during the whole phase of the lunar eclipse will be the Moon steadily getting darker and darker before it quickly turns a dark red colour.

On July 31, 2018, Mars will be closest to the Earth in 15 years, the Associated Press said Wednesday, July 25, 2018.

"In the middle of a lunar eclipse it can look as if a red planet has taken up residence near the Earth - they are both eerie and lovely and I'll certainly be looking out for it!"

The scientific duo supports their theory with the results of recent space missions and analyzes of samples of lunar rocks and soils that show that the Moon is not as dry as scientists long thought.

Total lunar eclipses and total solar eclipses are essentially the reverse of one another. The lunar eclipses are safe to view directly with the naked eye as you will not be seeing the Sun, but its light reflected from the Moon. The Earth's atmospheric composition will then greatly determine just how blood-coloured the Moon becomes.

The moon sets near a light on the roof of Safeco Field during a baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago White Sox, Saturday, July 21, 2018, in Seattle.

Fortunately, Indians will be able to watch the total eclipse from start to finish. The moon will take on a red or brown colour during a selenelion because it will be eclipsed by the earth.

To see the lunar eclipse better, you can use telescopes or binoculars.

It is because some of the sunlight going through Earth's atmosphere is bent around the edge of our planet and falls onto the moon's surface, an expert told APP.

When the moon rises in the southeast at 8:44 pm the eclipse will have already started, and be in a partial phase.

During the eclipse, the moon will first pass through the Earth's faint shadow known as the penumbra. The best view of it will come after 11.20pm on Friday night.

The moment of greatest eclipse, or maximum eclipse, will occur over the United Kingdom after 9.20pm BST and that will be the moment the moon reaches the dead-centre of the Earth's umbra.
