Girl, 7, killed on interstate after walking away from crash

State police are investigating the death of a girl who was struck and killed on a MI interstate while trying to get help for her dad, who had been involved in an accident. Shaw said a man, who appeared to be extremely intoxicated when dealing with police, crashed into an abandoned auto on I-94 and then off the highway through fencing. Her phone apparently could not place calls. The little girl was in a vehicle with her father when he crashed, reportedly while driving drunk.

Michigan State police spokesman Lt. Mike Shaw says the girl, identified as Dessandra Thomas, sent text messages to the Romulus Police Department about her father's accident before she was struck by another vehicle on I-94 near Detroit Metropolitan Airport early Sunday.

Sandria was at work Sunday morning when police delivered the news that her daughter was killed. The driver who struck the girl is not expected to be charged. "She was so helpful". Police were unable to locate Thomas even after pinging the cellphone. “Unfortunately, as she was crossing I-94 she was struck by the vehicle.”.

As the 7-year-old was trying to cross the highway median, she was hit by a auto. "Anybody that she touched she was a blessing to them".

'And there's somebody that's going to drive around the rest of their life knowing that they were involved in a traffic crash that killed a 7-year-old girl'.

The scope of the tragedy took some time to become clear as police tried to piece together what appeared to be separate incidents but in reality were three connected reports - a drunken driving crash, a girl in need of help and a woman who thought she hit a pedestrian with her vehicle.

She told WJBK that she was told before her daughter's birth that she couldn't have children.

It wasn't until a 911 call came in a short time later, a woman driving in the area told police she hit someone on the highway.

The mother continued: "She was a handsome thing, she was on her way to the third grade".

Sandria, who had Dessandra after 20 years of trying to have a baby added: 'She was 7 years old - she would give you the shirt off her back.
