A Petworth woman who has managed the Nurses Benevolent Fund for 30 years has been honoured by the Queen.
Professor Saunders was recognised for "distinguished service to medical education in the field of surgical oncology, to the diagnosis and management of breast cancer and melanoma, as an academic, researcher and clinician" while Professor Carapetis was honoured for "significant service to medicine in the field of paediatrics, particularly the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of rheumatic heart disease".
She added: "I dedicate this award to everyone in our team and to the young people that we care for".

There are no honours for local heroes involved in the response to the Grenfell Tower fire, but the Cabinet has said it expects "acts of bravery and extraordinary community spirit" which emerged from the tragedy to feature on future lists.

"I have had the privilege to work with some exceptional women over my 56-year career and I think we have managed to not only promote the interests of a key United Kingdom industry, but also provide the nurturing and support for young women in business that was simply not there when I started in 1962", said Neville.
Other prominent awards include damehoods for Emma Thompson (for services to drama) and Mary Beard (for services to study of classical civilisations) and knighthoods for Nobel Laureate Kazuo Ishiguro (for services to literature), Simon Schama, and Kenny Dalglish.
Smyth, recognised for her services to the community through her roles with charities and scientific organisations, said the rise in the number of women receiving the highest honours reflected a growing appreciation of the role they play in society.

Some 210 people have been made an OBE this year, 392 an MBE, and 318 awarded a BEM (British Empire Model).
