Even after the White House confirmed the summit, the run-up to it was not without roadblocks.

He said Iran views Mr Trump and the U.S. with "great pessimism", saying they are known for "quitting treaties and violating their commitments". The talks are expected to focus at least in part on an eventual deal to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program.

Before flying home, Trump planned to speak to reporters in Singapore after concluding the summit, the White House said.

Mr. Trump has made clear that his goal is denuclearization. It's possible the two leaders could agree to open liaison offices in each other's capitals.

Kim's Diplomatic Win Just meeting with Trump will be a diplomatic accomplishment for Kim, who has emerged from isolation in recent months and rapidly increased his outreach to other world leaders.

Kim Yo Jong gained notoriety at the Winter Olympics in South Korea. Positive results would do away with the need for South Korea to have to choose between "solidarity with the US" and stability in the Korean peninsula.
