Oath said that your chat history would remain accessible for six months, but the desktop app would serve no other function during that timeframe.

Verizon Communications subsidiary Oath, which oversees the AOL and Yahoo brands as well as the company's other digital content interests, announced that it would shutter the Yahoo Messenger service in just over a month.

"We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind", the company said in its statement today.

Yahoo Messenger will shut down on July 17.

"After July 17, you'll no longer be able to access your chats and the service will no longer work", Oath wrote to its users. However, should you want to download your chats now, you can do so by going here. But over the years new chatting services like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp eclipsed Yahoo Messenger in popularity.

According to Oath's brand-information site, Yahoo Messenger had a "peak user reach" of 122.6 million users. Users can still access Yahoo Messenger until that date.
