May says G7 will act over Russia's 'malign activity'

Peskov's comments come a day after Trump called for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the group of the world's leading nations, known as the G7, a step that would end Russia's worldwide isolation over its 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

In Italy, meanwhile, a spokesman for the new populist government that has signaled a similarly conciliatory approach toward Moscow said Rome agrees with Trump's call. Tensions mounted between the Trump administration and fellow G7 members Canada, Germany and France when the U.S. imposed steep tariffs on imported metals from the countries. Canada has countered with a plan to impose tariffs of its own on US metals and other consumer goods.

He has called Trump's imposition of the tariffs "irresponsible" and "insulting" because the two countries have fought as allies in Second World War, Korea and Afghanistan.

The French and Canadian leaders have each vowed to address the tariffs with Trump at the summit.

Lavrov said on national television that Russian Federation "never asked anyone to return" to the Group of Seven following the 2014 decision to suspend Russian Federation over Moscow's annexation of Crimea.

But Kudlow was quick to downplay the rift between the president and United States allies.
