This may seem like a unusual time to finally deliver a sequel to the 32-year-old box office smash, but late director Tony Scott, who was offered the project prior to his death in 2012, saw the new world of the 2010s as an opportunity to try something different from his previous hit.

The script has been written by Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig and Justin Marks, with Jerry Bruckheimer of Jerry Bruckheimer Films, David Ellison of Skydance and Tom Cruise serving as producers. There is not a lot known about the plot of the sequel to Tony Scott's hit from the '80s, but info continues to keep trickling out. As automation and technology have advanced, pilots are becoming a thing of the past as unmanned drones are the hope of the future.

The first Top Gun was the highest-grossing film of 1986, but will audiences still flock to theaters for more of this world and these characters? Filming is already well underway - Cruise tweeted a photo announcing the project to his fans last Wednesday with the hashtag "Day 1". Of course, Iceman graduated at the top of his Top Gun class after Maverick almost dropped out. With Kenny Loggins on board for a new version of "Danger Zone", this movie just keeps getting better.
