Cyrus Vance, Harvey Weinstein's prosecutor, also faces investigation

Here are reactions coming in already from Hollywood and beyond as the NYPD says Weinstein was formally arrested, processed and charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women. More charges are expected as a grand jury continues to hear testimony in the state's case with at least four women expected to testify, a source familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Weinstein stands accused by more than 70 women of sexual misconduct, including rape, with some of the accusations going back decades.

Weinstein has in the past denied all allegations of "non-consensual sex" and continues to do so. The detective also said that in 2013, Weinstein kept a woman in a room against her will "and engaged in sexual intercourse with informant by forcible compulsion", even though she had "clearly expressed her lack of consent to the act".

During a brief court appearance, during which Mr Weinstein did not speak, prosecutor Joan Illuzzi said the former mogul had "used his position, money and power to lure young women into situations where he was able to violate them sexually".

His defense attorney told reporters that Weinstein would enter a not guilty plea.

His more than 300 projects included the Cannes-winning "Pulp Fiction" (1994), "The English Patient" (1996) and "Gangs of New York" in 2002.

Police in California and London are also investigating Weinstein for possible wrongdoing.

"When McGowan talked about how long women have tried speaking out against sexual misconduct, she eventually brought up the idea of "#MeToo fatigue" among those who seem to have grown exhausted or apathetic of misconduct allegations against powerful men. That's the most frightful part of it, and that's why he's been able to do this for so long to so many women: "people give up, and then they feel like it's their fault".

Weinstein was then led out of the station house on his way to court, where he was arraigned on charges of first-degree rape and third-degree rape in one case, and first-degree criminal sex act in the other.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. had been under pressure over his 2015 decision not to pursue a complaint by model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez, who said Weinstein had groped her without her consent. We were sentenced to years of it before anybody believed us.

"Assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case", he said.

"We got you, Harvey Weinstein, we got you", McGowan tweeted during Weinstein's arraignment.

Weinstein, 66, has consistently denied any allegations of nonconsensual sex. "Mr Weinstein did not invent the casting couch in Hollywood".

"The NYPD thanks these fearless survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice", the police department said.

The Reuters news agency said the rape charge relates to a woman who was not identified. Add Harvey Weinstein as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Harvey Weinstein news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

McGowan further said she doesn't "ever want to see him again" and that she doesn't want to forgive him.

Sexual assault cases, particularly those that allegedly happened years ago, are notoriously hard to prosecute and often lack substantive forensic evidence.
