Arsenal can and must get better, insists Unai Emery

His French predecessor is an eloquent speaker in four or five languages, could offer thoughtful opinions on a number of non-football related topics and delivered a long list of memorable lines and "Wengerisms" during his news conferences.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis welcomed Unai Emery as his club's manager on Wednesday by claiming the Gunners' job is the "most attractive" in world football.

"I am thrilled to be joining one of the great clubs in the game", said Emery, who spent the past two seasons at Paris St Germain, taking them to a domestic treble this season.

A report from ESPN states that the 17-year-old Hamburg full back (the second youngest player in Bundesliga history) will move on this summer and clubs across Europe are lining up to sign the German youth global as his contract with recently relegated Hamburg ends in July.

"This team is a big team, with big players, good players and we think we need to change little things - a few players", Emery said.

"I want to speak individually with all the players face to face".

It's a curious statement considering many Arsenal fans will be keen for a quick turnaround after the club finished fifth and sixth in the Premier League, respectively, during the final two years on Wenger's watch.

"It's a big challenge but I've worked also with other big projects, and for me, I am proud to be here and to work after Arsene Wenger", Reuters quoted him as saying. "I like this personality, I like (being) this protagonist with the ball", he said. I think that's about battling for every title. Succeeding a club legend is no easy task but he seems well-equipped to handle the additional challenges that come with filling such large shoes. Chief executive Ivan Gazidis said the decision to appoint the former Valencia and Spartak Moscow boss had been unanimous. I'm very excited to be given the responsibility to start this important new chapter in Arsenal's history.

"Thank you, Arsene Wenger, for your legacy".

"The thing that distinguished him above all that was the chemistry between us and the feeling for football in the room".

Wenger won the double in his first full season with Arsenal in 1997-98 - an achievement that might be beyond Emery given the rebuilding job facing him.

Gazidis also tellingly revealed Emery has penned a contract for three years. And I want that to continue. "The objective is to work hard together and with these talented players to work", he said.

"Now it is time to see the World Cup and prepare for next season".

Emery's reputation was elevated after guiding Sevilla to three straight Europa League titles, but he couldn't make an impact in the continent's more illustrious competition.
