Walmart Strengthens US Store, Online Q1 Growth

Despite turning in a strong quarter, Walmart wasn't getting the benefit of the doubt from Wall Street. "We're using technology in more ways to simplify work for associates so they can better serve customers".

According to the Recommendation Trends of the stock polled by Finviz, the company has a consensus recommendation of 2.3 out of the scale from 1 to 5 where 1 stands for Buy and 5 means Sell.

EPS Estimate for the next Quarter is 1.12.

This year, Walmart expects to expand online grocery pickup by around 1,000 stores to reach more than 2,100 locations nationwide. For the first quarter of 2019, food categories continued to perform well in the segment, with comps and traffic growth across categories, although unseasonably cool April weather somewhat dampened general merchandise sales and traffic. The company has a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.46, a current ratio of 0.76 and a quick ratio of 0.20.

The company P/E (price to earnings) ratio is 26.9 and Forward P/E ratio is 16.65. The stock presently has an average rating of Buy and a consensus price target of $98.43. The Return on Equity ratio of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Walmart's quarterly revenue was up 4.2% compared to the same quarter past year.

However, the acquisition will hurt the earnings per share of the full year by 25 cents to 30 cents per share, said Walmart if the deal can close before the current quarter ends.

In his comments on USA results, McMillon noted that some of Walmart's recent initiatives are bearing fruit.

Walmart's total revenue was $122.7 billion, an increase of $5.1 billion, or 4.4 percent (excluding currency, total revenue came to $120.7 billion, a rise of $3.2 billion, or 2.7 percent). The business had revenue of $135.15 billion for the quarter, compared to analysts' expectations of $133.63 billion.
