Melania Trump taken to hospital for surgery

Melania Trump, who has been gradually raising her profile as first lady, recently hosted her first state dinner and launched a public awareness campaign to help children.

US First Lady Melania Trump has undergone a "successful" kidney surgery and is now recuperating at a naval hospital in Maryland, her office said.

The president spoke with the first lady before the procedure, and he also spoke to the doctor after the procedure had been finished, a White House official said.

"Mrs. Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week", the statement said.

The hospitalization comes as Melania Trump, 48, has taken a higher-profile role in the White House in recent weeks.

"Successful procedure, she is in good spirits", Trump tweeted of his third wife. "Thank you to all of the well-wishers!"

Normally, this is an outpatient procedure, but the first lady will be recovering the rest of the week in the hospital.

One example of a benign growth on the kidneys that may be treated with an embolization procedure is an angiomyolipoma, or a benign collection of fat and muscle. It described the operation as an "embolization procedure" to treat the kidney condition. But if there is bleeding from the vessels, symptoms can include bruising, front and back pain in the kidney area or lightheadedness, he said. This procedure is used in treatment of tumours. The condition tends to occur in middle-aged women and may cause problematic bleeding if the tumor becomes large enough.

"Politics aside, @FLOTUS #MelaniaTrump is a mother of a young son, and even tho its routine-it was still a surgery, and I wish her a speedy recovery", said another. Trump let everyone know via Twitter that it was a "Successful procedure, she is in good spirits".

"The president is expected to visit his wife at the hospital later on Monday", the statement read.
