Mariners' Cano may need surgery on broken hand

At the time of the incident, it sure looked and sounded like Cano's injury was significant.

The team said he was diagnosed with a fractured fifth metacarpal bone on right hand, but did not say how long Cano would be out of action.

Mariners: Cano hasn't missed a game this season and hasn't played in fewer than 150 in any of the last 11 years. The next hitter, Jean Segura, blasted a bases-loaded single up the middle past a diving Iglesias.

Greiner opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth. The Mariners are putting up 4.64 runs per game while allowing 4.61 per contest.

Castellanos was hit by a pitch in the first inning and had his left hand checked before going to first base.

The Mariners are 4-1 in their last five during game three of a series and 4-0 in Paxton's last four road starts. With a runner on second and two outs, Tigers' catcher Grayson Greiner stepped to the plate. He was attended to by manager Scott Servais and a team trainer and walked off the field several minutes later.

Felix Hernandez (5-3) got the win but labored through five innings, allowing five runs and eight hits. We lose as a team.

The Mariners activated right-hander Dan Altavilla from the 10-day disabled list before the second game. With Acta managing, Ichiro Suzuki served as Seattle's bench coach for the two games.

Mariners: Seager was able to play on after Jones' double off his leg in the first game.

Clearly, the hit-by-pitch was not intentional. He remained in the game in right field before being removed for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the second.

Toeing the rubber for the Tigers will be Blaine Hardy and he has gone 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in three games so far with all three appearances coming out of the pen. The Mariners have the offensive edge in this one and they have a big edge on the mound with Paxton over Hardy, who is making his first Major League Baseball start after 167 games out of the pen in his career.
