Israel strikes Iranian targets in Syria after rocket fire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu travelled to Moscow on Wednesday to meet with President Vladimir Putin and discuss military coordination in Syria.

"Yesterday I delivered a clear message to the Assad regime: Our action is directed against Iranian targets in Syria".

"They need to decide if they want to increase the friction and for example ask Hezbollah to do something, or they understand that at this stage they can not take action against us and need to wait". The military said the Air Force hit weapons depots, logistics sites and intelligence centers used by elite Iranian forces, many of them near Damascus.

"The global community needs to prevent the Iranian Al-Quds force from establishing itself in Syria".

Several countries condemned the Iranian rocket attacks that prompted the Israeli strikes - 20 rockets fired from Syria at northern Israel that either fell short (16) or were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome batteries (4) - and stressed Israel's right to defend itself. "We, of course, struck nearly all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria, and they need to remember this arrogance of theirs".

The Syrian military said the Israeli strikes killed three people and wounded two, without saying if any Iranians or Iran-backed militiamen were among them.

The Israeli strikes came after Iranian rocket attack strikes on the Israeli-held Golan Heights.

"The Zionist regime's repeated attacks on Syrian soil under self-proclaimed, baseless pretexts amount to a blatant violation of Syria's sovereignty and goes against all worldwide conventions", Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said in an early Friday statement.

"Prior to 1979, Iran and Israel were allies".

Further isolation of Iran is appropriate after President Donald Trump officially withdrew from the nuclear deal with Tehran and reimposed sanction, according to Danny Ayalon, a former Israeli ambassador to the U.S.

Iran pushed allied militias toward the Golan Heights and moved rockets and rocket production into Syria to better supply Hezbollah with more accurate weaponry.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to the allegation that Iranian forces were behind the Golan attack nor has an Iranian military official. He said it will not allow Iran to turn Syria into a forward military base against the Jewish state.

We hit almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria.

Rouhani didn't point out of Israel's strikes in Syria, or these towards the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Iran's ability to hit back further could be limited.

However the chairman of his nation's parliamentary committee on worldwide affairs, Allaeddine Boroujerdi, condemned the strikes, warning that "Israel has entered a harmful recreation".

When Iran escalated its intervention in Syria to back up Assad, it gradually brought in heavy equipment such as the armed drone that Israel said crossed into its airspace in February. The Trump administration's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran will inevitably be seen by Tehran as a signal that the gloves are coming off and that the new United States policy rests upon containment or maybe even regime change, rather than dialogue.

Late Tuesday, Syrian state media said Israel struck a military outpost near the capital of Damascus.

The alleged Iranian attack last night - I say alleged because at this stage there is no confirmation from Iranian sources as to the precise authors of the attack - involved a single and relatively short-range system, what appears to have been a multiple-barrelled rocket launcher.
