Google Maps Just Got a Million Times Better (Especially for Foodies)

Google at its I/O 2018 conference announced slew of updates and one of the major updates was for its most popular Google Maps app.

The smart phone map will start including a "For you" feed that will give recommendations based on trending things in a particular area and your personalized interests. It can also be used when walking about, and in some countries Google Maps can also be used to help find train/bus departure times, where it leaves from, and so on.

As Google mentions, there are times when walking directions based on Global Positioning System inside of Maps are less than stellar.

Google will also display "matches", which is a score based on how well Google thinks it will resonate with you. And of course, once a decision has been made, you can use Google Maps to secure a reservation and book a ride. Following the release of AR direction, a user simply needs to hold their phone up and Google Maps will match the view from their camera to the saved Street View imagery. It basically takes the camera's view and overlays AR directions on it to help users know how to get to their destination.

"Just for fun", Google has also added a guide companion in the form of an animal. They can then add more venues and whatnot and vote on which one they want to go to. The Explore tab also has a list called "Foodie List" that shows the places that are trending in that area. Google has recently exhibited a bunch of new Google Maps features at the Google I/O event today. Tapping the score brings up a detailed view explaining where the number came from-reasons can include your dining preferences, other places you've visited, and ratings you've given on Maps.

Adding the essence of a social network, Google Maps will soon incorporate a new group planning feature that lets users create shareable shortlists making it easier to coordinate plans with friends and family. For example, you can know about the coolest café in the neighbourhood or a new restaurant that has opened up in the For You tab.
