Even if Delhi Daredevils target 14 points, which is usually what it takes for a team to get through to the playoffs, they need to win six out of the next eight games.

Gambhir shifted to Delhi side this season after captaining Kolkata Knight Riders for the past few years. "He will play remaining part of IPL for the Delhi Daredevils for free", News18 quoted a source privy to the development said.

In a hurriedly called press conference at the Kotl, Gambhir said he was under no pressure to quit as skipper.

Gambhir had earlier led Delhi in 2010 edition of the tournament. And looking at the position, I have chose to step down as captain. While he may not be able to guide Delhi to the title this time, but he is more than capable of doing same damage with the bat.

Following a series of defeats, DD skipper Gautam Gambhir has stepped down from captaincy following a series of defeats in the IPL.

"The bell started ringing after the last game (against Kings XI Punjab, the Daredevils's first home game at the Kotla) and it was time to take a call. I would like to congratulate him for having put the team ahead of himself". Reports now claim that the former DD captain has decided that he will not take any salary from the team for representing them this season. I had to take responsibility being the leader of this ship, and I owe that responsibility.

Ponting said that it was not an easy decision to step down in middle of the season. So I feel that it was the right time. From six matches, Gambhir has scored just 85 keeps running at a strike rate of 96.59.

Gambhir's decision brings the young Iyer to the fore. "And obviously Gautam's made a decision to do the right thing", Ponting explained.

We're very much in this competition.

Later Shreyas Iyer added, "I want to thank the management and my coaches for appointing me as the captain of the team". Gautam will be around the group and mentor Shreyas into captaincy.

"Maybe the only thing I can point out is I was desperate to turn things around". An unsure Gambhir consumed far too many deliveries and scored precious little.

Daredevils coach Ricky Ponting still believes the team can turn around their season and go on to lift the trophy in May.
