Family spokesperson Jim McGrath who announced the statement did not indicate the nature of Bush's illness but said that she had had a series of recent hospitalisations. She has consulted with her family and doctors and decided not to seek additional medical treatment.

A source close to the Bush family tells ABC News she is suffering from heart and respiratory failure.

Hager, an anchor on NBC's "Today" show, said on the program Monday morning that Bush is resting comfortably with family.

Bush also remarked on her longtime marriage to her husband in the magazine, writing: "I am still old and still in love with the man I married 72 years ago". Barbara, wife of former President George H.W. Bush, served as first lady during his presidency from 1989 to 1993.
