While police initially did not arrest him, the eventual pressure resulted in the matter being handed over to CBI and Sengar being arrested.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Friday that he had seen reports about the "horrific case" of the abuse and murder of the nomadic Bakerwal community girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua. Two days ago, speaking on the recent rape incidents, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said no perpetrators will be spared involved in the case. The third one relates to Sengar's brother Atul Singh, who claimed that he was attacked by the victim's father.

Two BJP ministers who defended the men arrested for raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua quit from their posts today after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti put her foot down, telling the BJP leadership that their continuation in the government had become untenable. Shashi Singh is the second person to be arrested in the case.

Meanwhile, Sengar has been sent to a seven-day CBI custody on Saturday.

"I gave resignation on moral values".

She has also alleged that while the MLA was raping her daughter, Shashi Singh stood outside the room as a guard.

The Allahabad High Court also slammed the Uttar Pradesh Police for not taking appropriate action against the accused men. "Therefore, keeping in mind the perception and general situation, the two BJP leaders, after holding consultations with the prime minister and other senior leaders of the party, chose to submit their resignations".

"I have done nothing but I resigned so as there's no violence in the country", he added. "They have been victimised", Balbir Singh, a spokesman for Choudhary Lal Singh, told Agence France-Presse.

"Taking into consideration the situation and the general perception, the two ministers in consultation with party leaders chose to resign from their posts, " said BJP's national general secretary Ram Madhav after chairing a meeting of the party leaders in Jammu.

The crimes have shaken India in a way reminiscent of the fatal gang-rape of a Delhi student on a bus in 2012 that made headlines around the world.
