Ava DuVernay To Direct DC Comic's Superhero Movie New Gods

Fresh off "A Wrinkle In Time", DuVernay has signed on to direct the big-screen adaptation of "The New Gods" for DC and Warner Bros., according to Deadline.

She showed her interest in the New Gods past year when asked on social media who her favorite character was, her response was Big Barda, a powerful warrior and wife of Mister Miracle, both creations of legendary comic artist/writer Jack Kirby. The New Gods live on two warring planets, the Eden-like New Genesis and the hellish Apokolips, which is ruled by the evil Darkseid. Evidently, DuVernay, who once revealed Big Barda was her favorite superhero for "many reasons", found DC's New Gods more to her liking. There isn't a comic, arguably, that has influenced the DC Universe as much as his, and if any series - or director - were to galvanise Warner Bros. flagging superhero franchise, it would be a DuVernay directed New Gods.

As if Ava DuVernay weren't already leaps and bounds ahead of mainstream Hollywood, the barrier-breaking director just made history once more. In fact, the studio has a bad habit of announcing films and then never getting them off the ground, and today, we have another to add to the list: The New Gods.

The New Gods, also known as the "Fourth World", is one of a trilogy of comics alongside Forever People and Mister Miracle.

All of the New Gods possess superhuman abilities of various kinds and to differing degrees, including superhuman strength, stamina, reflexes and speed.

Next was the 1988 mini-series Cosmic Odyssey, which was illustrated by a young, pre-Hellboy Mike Mignola, prominently featured the Jack Kirby New Gods mythology, and Highfather, Orion, Lightray and Darkseid were main characters alongside the Justice League. Big Barda is one of the New Gods and the wife of Mister Miracle, also a Kirby creation.

With her love of superheroes, we believe DuVernay will do a stellar job.
