Players on Xbox One will be able to compete against other gamers on PC, Mac as well as mobile, but not with PS4 users, and vice versa. NetEase announced the FortCraft beta testing period not long after Epic Games and People Can Fly lifted the lid on the mobile version of Fortnite Battle Royale. "For any other questions regarding "Fortnite" cross-network play between Xbox and PlayStation, please reach out to Epic or Sony directly".
Even with Fortnite, the capability for Xbox One and PS4 gamers to play side-by-side is possible, as witnessed by a "configuration issue" that allowed gamers from each respective camp to play against one another for a brief period of time previous year before it was shutdown. Fortnite's mobile controls seem similar to other mobile games, with a touch joystick on the left side of the display and face buttons for actions like aiming down the scope, jumping, and crouching. But, Sony has been hesitating to partner with Microsoft. Apparently, Sony, the owner of all things PS4, is quite reluctant to allow cross-play with Xbox One due to some questionable "security reasons" they claim to be a hindrance for the cross-play between the two console platforms.
As Kotaku points out, CD Projekt Red is only waiting on Microsoft and Sony to do the deal and it can setup cross-platform play between Gwent players on Xbox and PS4 too. However, Sony didn't come forward to join the party. And since the PS4 is now outselling Xbox One, disabling the function will only help sustain the present sales figures. Spencer said at the time that he "would have liked to see them leave it on". At present, Minecraft supports cross-platform between Xbox One, mobile, PC and VR.
Fortnite Battle Royale is coming to mobile devices. Sony also tried to dodge the cross-platform play before citing security concerns.
Looking ahead, it's unclear whether Sony might reverse its course.More news: Chemical industry slams Trump steel tariffs
One can only think of the Japanese company trying to save their business by not opening cross-play for the Xbox One.
Squad play allows up to five players, be they friends formed before finding a match or strangers placed together during matchmaking, to form a team.
"Microsoft has always been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles", a Microsoft representative said in an email to The Jolt Journal today.
Bluetooth controllers will also be made compatible with Fortnite on Mobile, although there's no current release date for this feature. It is, however, not clear if it was a bug or an effort by Fortnite to demonstrate just how easy it is to enable the cross-platform play from the technical perspective, notes Forbes.
