Real Star Trek? President Trump proposes military space force

We have the Air Force.

Donald Trump has proposed a new brand of armed forces - which he's dubbed the "space force". "We have the army, the navy".

Trump didn't make clear what shape this "space force" might take and what adversaries it would confront.

Trump's own defense secretary and Air Force secretary argued vociferously against it when members of Congress pushed it past year, O'Keefe said.

But that didn't stop President Trump for advocating for a "Space Force" today.

Trump was speaking Tuesday about his administration's investments in space exploration to members of the military when he said that space is becoming a "war-fighting domain".

The commander-in-chief doesn't think the US military is large enough - so he announced during a weird press conference Tuesday that it will expand beyond planet Earth via a "space force".

"We will call it the space force", President Trump proclaimed.

. We'll call it the space force.' Not really serious", he told the crowd to mixed laughter, "And then I said 'What a great idea. Maybe we'll have to do that'.

It was unclear whether The Donald was joking about the idea of "Space Force".

Mr Trump, who earlier fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, said he'd originally coined the term "Space Force" as a joke while discussing USA government spending, and private investment, in space. However, the bill does leave the door open to a future space-related branch, The Hill reports, by requiring the Secretary of Defense to study the possibility of creating a space-related military branch someday. The goal was for the United States to stay ahead of rivals like Russian Federation and China, which are advancing in space-related military operations.
