Trump praises drug-dealer death penalty at political rally

U.S. President Donald Trump arrives to speak at a campaign rally at Atlantic Aviation in Moon Township, Pa., Saturday, March 10, 2018.

DETROW: So rallying with Rick Saccone in a big airplane hanger, Trump put the Trump twist on the presidency.

Trump says, "the only way to solve the drug problem is through toughness".

But for nearly all of his 75-minute performance in front of a raucous crowd packed into a hangar, it was in-his-element Trump, vintage 2016: rambling and fiery, boastful and jocular - the part of being president that he loves perhaps the most. "I encourage all voters, especially pro-life voters, to support Rick Saccone for Congress on Tuesday".

Trump's first mention of Kim was met with boos and jeers from the crowd, but Trump told them that that they had to be "nice".

"Do you think the drug dealers who kill thousands of people during their lifetime, do you think they care who's on a blue-ribbon committee?" he asked. Most Republicans on Capitol Hill oppose the Trump tariffs.

"There's also a segment of undecideds that hopefully they'll remember why they voted for Trump to begin with, and they'll come out and vote for me", Saccone said before talking to natural gas workers in Canonsburg. He also pledged to work on reducing the U.S. trade deficits.

"I don't know if you're ready". But Lamb also supports the duties, so the issue isn't as effective a wedge for Saccone and Trump as it might otherwise be.

Despite pouring millions into a district that Trump won by 20 points, Saccone is barely ahead of Democratic candidate Conor Lamb in a race that Republican lawmakers fear could augur a blue wave in November.

President Donald Trump is bashing the press for its coverage of his decision to agree to direct talks with North Korea. "As soon as he gets in, he's not going to vote for us".

Trump delivered "about five minutes" of what had been scripted for Saturday night's rally, a White House official familiar with the speech said. "Steel is back, and aluminum is back".

"We need our congressman, Saccone".

While the rally was not specifically advertised as one for Saccone, a loss by him would mark the third time that Trump had thrown his political might behind a candidate without success.

Though Trump touted the steel tariff as a win for workers in the district, the steelworkers' union and other labor groups are backing Lamb, a Marine veteran and former federal prosecutor.

Casting himself as a Democrat independent from the national party, Lamb has pledged not to vote for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as speaker if the Democrats take the house.

'Then you wonder why we have a problem, and that's why we have a problem.

"It will keep people from any positive interface with police, any positive interface with public health, any interface with doctors", he said, noting that it could lead to fewer people receiving treatment for their addictions.

TRUMP: You have to have him. "They're all watching", Trump told the crowd in Moon Township.

Looking forward, Trump announced his 2020 campaign slogan would be "Keep America great" since he had already "made America great again". "I know her weakness", said Mr Trump.

A day after getting news that the USA economy produced 313,000 jobs last month, Trump said his policies are paying off.

And if this race is as close as people are predicting, a little boost from the president could make the difference, and, Republicans hope, prevent a political embarrassment heading into the midterms.
