Accident in Gujarat kills 26; CM Vijay Rupani announces compensation


The accident occurred near Randhola village on the Bhavnagar-Rajkot highway, when the truck ferrying around 60 people enroute to a wedding, plunged 20 feet below.

Local police officials said the accident took place around 7.30 a.m. local time (0200GMT) near the Ranghola area of Bhavnagar district. Primary reports suggest that the truck driver lost control leading to the accident. Officials doubt more casualties as there may be people trapped under the truck which overturned in the accident. It said that the injured were rushed to the nearby Bharat Nagar Senior and Tindour Government Hospital for treatment.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani has ordered an inquiry and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased.

The chief minister expressed grief over the incident and prayed for the departed souls, it said.

Rescue teams have reached the spot where the incident took place.

PL Mal, the police superintendent where the accident occurred in Gujarat state, told The Indian Express newspaper that the driver appeared to have lost control because he was exhausted.

Prime Minster Narendra Modi had also tweeted his condolences over the Bhavnagar accident. The accident was extremely unfortunate and anguishing.
