Mysterio, 43, a three-time world champion, has reportedly been in talks for a WWE return on a freelance basis, and even teased it himself a couple of weeks ago on Twitter.
Cena, who lost the Elimination Chamber match on Sunday and in the process lost his path to WrestleMania, took the mic Monday night on Raw and issued a challenge to Taker.
Cena, of course, will find his way onto the WrestleMania 34 card, likely in one of the event's biggest matches. On "SmackDown Live", he earned his way into the six-man WWE Championship match that'll take place at Fastlane on March 11. If at all the John Cena vs The Undertaker match happens at the Wrestlemania this year, it will be one of the biggest matches in a long time. The Undertaker is seemingly still retired-please, please let him stay retired-and with numerous other title matches already tentatively set, suddenly Cena's spot at WrestleMania was at risk (in kayfabe terms, of course). If you look back and think what we did at WrestleMania 31 with the tank and the soldiers and Lana and everything, this year we may even blow that out the water.
Rumors began to surfaces days after the big pay-per-view that Mysterio was considering a return to the company.More news: Turkish President Tells Crying Little Girl She'll Be Honoured If She's 'Martyred'
Monday night WWE RAW opened with John Cena hit the ring with his business. Styles will now be defending his WWE Championship at Fastlane against Cena, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler. Is Nakamura the least visible Royal Rumble champion ever?
Cena requested to work a 'Mania match with either Samoa Joe, who is now injured, or Mysterio, who left more of a buzz at the Royal Rumble with his appearance than any other wrestler, including the debuting Ronda Rousey. GM Daniel Bryan was next out, saying that he had an idea of how Cena could earn his way into the match: a match vs. the champion AJ Styles in the main event TONIGHT.
But John Cena vs. Rey Mysterio?
Cena announced Monday night, nearly 24 hours after he failed to earn a WrestleMania spot in the Elimination Chamber, that he was heading over to the blue brand to see if that could help his cause. "That would be a dream match for me and my brother".
"I don't make the matches and it's obvious that this seems and I've been told that match is not happening as that match is impossible", Cena, a free agent in the WWE, said. The Undertaker to the "Road to WrestleMania" season of shows would guarantee increased attendance for live events.
