"We know that the violence on the border is used as a cover for terrorist activity, as happened last Saturday".

Mordechai concluded with a final warning to Hamas leaders.

Following his briefing the defense minister visited the wounded soldiers at Beersheba's Soroka-University Medical Center, where he told them that he was proud of them and vowed to find those responsible for the attack.

"The U.S. ignored throughout the history of the [Arab-Israeli] conflict the right of the Palestinian people to live in security and peace on their land", Hamas said.

The incident was the most serious to take place on the southern border since Operation Protective Edge in 2014.

It described the US accusations as a "green light for the Israeli occupation to continue its aggressive approach against the Palestinian people". They have been striking for 10 days, demanding payment from the Hamas-run Health Ministry.

Saturday's explosion sparked a round of strikes over the weekend.

For instance, the IDF did not specify whether the strikes were carried out by air or artillery forces.

Earlier on Tuesday, during his visit near the Gaza border, Lieberman slammed Hamas for sacrificing the lives of its civilians by encouraging them to start violent riots and commit terror attacks. Two military compounds belonging to the terror group were hit, one of which included a weapons manufacturing site.

Hostilities have flared in recent months, including large demonstrations along the Gaza border and occasional rocket fire met by Israeli retaliatory strikes.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman confirmed the Israeli army destroyed a tunnel at the border between Israel and Gaza overnight between Sunday and Monday.

The fresh strikes came after a rocket was sacked at Israel from Gaza on Sunday night, in the second consecutive night of conflict in the country's south.
