Abbas' visit comes just a week after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Abbas in Ramallah as part of the diplomatic campaign to find multinational backers for a Palestinian state.
Despite Abbas's refusal to have the USA involved in the peace process, Putin said at the start of the meeting with Abbas that he had spoken by phone with Trump about the situation between Israel and the PA. Pressed on whether he wishes for the Israeli prime minister to emerge without a criminal charge, Adelson replied: "I wish for peace". The PM slipped on Monday, reporting on informing the White House about the sovereignty talks without first discussing it with Jason Goldblatt, Jared Kushner, or, at least, Ambassador David Friedman.
"I think it is very foolish for the Palestinians and I also think it would be very foolish for the Israelis if they don't make a deal", Trump said.
The status of Jerusalem, which is home to holy religious sites and has particular significance for Muslims, Christians and Jews, has long remained a sensitive topic and one of the core issues in the Israeli-Palestine conflict.
However, Trump, despite being well aware of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian land in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, took the liberty of recognizing Jerusalem, a contested city that lies at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as Israel's undivided capital. The UN voted to condemn Trump administration's decision overwhelmingly.More news: Losses narrow at Credit Suisse despite U.S. tax reforms
The White House said Trump repeated his belief that it is time to work toward a lasting peace agreement.
We are going to see what goes on.
"I wanted to make it clear that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel", he told the newspaper. "His decision to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and consider Jerusalem the capital of Israel was like a slap in our face". He also imposed a freeze on settlement activity - meaning Jews building in historic Jewish communities in the West Bank and eastern sections of Jerusalem - as another gesture toward Abbas.
In another controversial move apparently aimed at forcing Palestinians into negotiations with the Israelis, the USA has been applying economic pressure.
