Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. If you dedicate a part evening after office to them, you can still have a great Valentine's Day. So, then, perhaps it's too bad Vancouver's new Golden Corral opens on Valentine's Day, which is always February 14, and not today, Fat Tuesday.

It is also Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent - the period of forty weekdays leading to Easter which many Christians observe with fasting, enitence and charity. On that day we remember when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey while Pilate, on a giant warhorse, was parading in on the other side of town with legions of soldiers.

Valentine's Day falling on Ash Wednesday is not the only calendar coincidence this year, Easter falls on April 1, which is April Fool's Day.

The LCMS, for example, lets individual congregations decide whether they will offer imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday, said the Rev.
