"As the world's first announced Gigabit LTE modem to achieve speeds of up to 2 Gbps, the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem sets a major mobile industry milestone, created to provide enhanced mobile broadband and deliver an extremely important gigabit coverage layer for commercial 5G networks and mobile devices that are expected to start launching in 2019", said Serge Willenegger, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm's wireless division.
The Snapdragon X24 modem claims to be the first to offer 2 gigabits per second throughput, the first to be made on the 7nm manufacturing process (which enable it to do more with less silicon), and the first to support 7x carrier aggregation. While we're still waiting on the Snapdragon 845, which will ship with the slower and less power-efficient X20 modem in March, Qualcomm is announcing the X24 to punctuate the notion that LTE still has plenty of life left.
Serge Willenegger, senior vice president and general manager, 4G/5G and Industrial IOT, Qualcomm Wireless GmbH, said the Snapdragon X24 packs a powerful array of the most advanced 4G LTE technologies commercially available which will help mobile operators fully mobilize their spectrum assets and maximize the capacity of their networks. In the uplink, Snapdragon X24 supports Category 20 upload speeds, 3×20 MHz CA and up to 256-QAM.
The modem's 14nm RF transceiver and QET5100 Envelope Tracker make the X24 the first to support 60 MHz envelope tracking, a technique that continuously adjusts the amplifier's power supply to keep it operating at peak efficiency. The chipset will support concurrent multi-constellation multi-frequency global navigation satellite systems, which it said could deliver highly accurate location-based services.
Qualcomm's latest mobile modem promises 'fibre-like internet speeds'
Qualcomm says that the fiber-like internet speeds that the X24 LTE modem is capable of will give us "mobile experiences such as immersive 360-degree video, connected cloud computing, rich entertainment and instant apps".
And the best part is Qualcomm is ready for demonstrating the new X24 LTE modem at the Mobile World Congress 2018 event which is scheduled to happen in just ten days from now.
We had a chance to see the industry-first demonstration of a wireless PROFINET Industrial Ethernet over 5G NR. We can expect speeds up to 10 times faster than the average 4G network, he added. "As evidenced by our work with these distinguished OEMs from around the globe and as we demonstrated in 3G and 4G LTE, Qualcomm Technologies is utilizing our deep expertise and technology leadership to support the successful launch of 5G NR, driving innovation in the mobile ecosystem". If the X24 performs as advertised it's likely to be appearing in mobile devices for many years to come.
OnePlus has partnered with Qualcomm to launch a 5G device in 2019 by making use of their Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem family.More news: Canada pledges $12M for rebuilding newly liberated areas of Iraq
