Virginia holds off Duke in ACC clash

Duke learned enough at halftime to follow Virginia's lead and do what it does, no matter the opponent.

Saturday was what college basketball is all about. It was a script that would have made David and Goliath envious. Saturday was only the 15th time in Cameron history that a pair of top five teams squared off. Eventually, the game settled down, four minutes in, and the No. 18 Blue Devils (16-5, 5-3 Atlantic Coast) and Eagles (6-14, 1-5) took to the half court offense.

Maybe I'm being a little unfair, as aside from a trip to Florida State, most of Clemson's tough games are at home. A battle between the top two teams in the ACC. Duke brings their 91.7 points per game offense and 43 Rebounds per game into this matchup.

Bogues hit three of five from 3-point range and sank all eight of his free throws for Stephen F. Austin (17-4, 6-2 Southland Conference). "And they do a great jobs with the rotations especially the big guys".

"Let's go, I'll take that", Bennett said.

"What they're really good at is - a lot of times it looks like five guys are defending the ball because everybody is ready to help or recover", Allen said. "He does that often, so you really can't be surprised by it". The rest of All-ACC will be up in the air, but Bagley is the Player of the Year and unless something drastic happens, that's not going to change.

There was no doubt in Guy's mind that Jerome would launch the big shot.

On the season, Virginia basketball averages 69.2 points, 33.0 rebounds and 13.8 assists per game. Its not even who the best team is, its who plays the best, I think its an afternoon game right. BC coughed up the ball 20 or more times for the fourth-straight game and shot below 60 percent from the charity stripe. He started looking around and surveying it and then shot it.

Bagley was active in the opening minutes, when Duke forced the Cavaliers to miss their first six field goal attempts The drought ended with Guy's short jumper in the lane with 15:41 to go in the first half, temporarily quieting the frenzied student section that remained on its feet throughout the game.

Devon Hall led the way as the Cavaliers (20-1, 9-0) stretched their winning streak to 12 and bolstered their case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Aside from one terrific night in Chicago against Michigan State, most of the conversation around Duke has focused on Marvin Bagley III, not the play - or antics - of Allen. Jerome had another chance in the last minute and drilled a dagger. "I mean, that's really what makes their defense so well".

The dream materializing all around him in the closing seconds, Jerome soaked in the glory. Virginia allows just 51.6 points per game, tops in the country, and only two teams - No. 7 West Virginia (68) and Virginia Commonwealth (67) - have scored more than 61 points against it.

Virginia's molasses-like tempo has something to do with those numbers, but they're killing it in all the pace-free stats, too. Sometimes, Coach of the Year has gone to a coach who merely surprised us and not one who has done the best job, in my opinion.
